LA MORTELLA, THE GARDENS OF LOVE IN ISCHIA
The La Mortella Gardens aren’t just a horticultural masterpiece. They are a place where time doesn’t pass and the real world doesn’t exist.
Created by the famous landscape architect Russell Page in 1956, they’re a living testament to the profound love shared between Sir William Walton and Lady Susana. He was inspired by their deep love, the volcanic rocks all around, and the suggestive natural landscape with its openings towards the Mediterranean Sea.
Their love story weaves through the avenues and fountains, creating a captivating backdrop to your botanical adventure.
As you wander through these “gardens of love”, be prepared to witness a kaleidoscope of over 1,700 plant species, constantly widened and developed, year after year, including some rare gems gathered from the farthest corners of our planet.
Close your eyes and immerse yourself in this unchanted sanctuary for lovers of nature and romance alike.
This is your chance to look inside yourself and know yourself better, thanks to the harmony lavished by Mother Nature.
BE A PLANT HUNTER FOR A DAY
Imagine hunting wonders and losing yourself in an enormous garden. Picture being a Plant hunter for a day, exploring the hidden treasures that La Mortella Gardens holds.
Let the scents, the colors, and the sounds lead you to discover plants, trees, pieces of art, and breathtaking views you’ve never seen before.
Our journey begins in “the valley”.
It’s like to descend into the heart of an almost prehistoric realm, where a sanctuary untouched by time, beckons. Here, towering ancient plants reach for the skies and their leaves whisper secrets of old (wow, the Ginkgo Biloba in front of us is very big and its yellow foliage is amazing). Among them, ferns and palms create a scene so verdant it seems stolen from the age of dinosaurs. The soft murmur of tranquil fountains, melody complemented by the serene lullabies of hidden ponds, invite us to lose ourselves in this living museum of nature’s splendor. Each corner unfolds a new, dream-like wonder. Here the “Victoria House” appears to us: the undisputed queen of the waterlilies (all these orchids, bromeliads, aroids, and splendid creepers fill our eyes with every possible color).
Before ascending to the upper level, we allow ourselves a short break at the tea room, to appreciate their delicacies among the silence and the sounds of nature (we feel at peace with the world and with ourselves, and time passes without us noticing).
Arrived to “the hill”, the landscape looks like more familiar, yet elevated to an ethereal beauty. This higher ground, among aloes, agaves, palms and aquatic plants, offers a vantage point like no other, bestowing upon us breathtaking views of Forio and its shimmering beaches. From this lofty perch, the world unfolds below in a tapestry of vibrant colors and textures, a panoramic spectacle that captures the essence of wonder, leaving us with a sense of belonging to something far greater than ever imagined. Here, amidst the embrace of nature and the whisper of the breeze, we find a panoramic Greek theater from which to observe a wonderful sunset. Dreams alight upon the horizon, inviting us to step into a realm where the earth touches the sky (no words can describe this moment).
We have arrived to the end but, before leaving, let’s take a moment to meditate at the “Thai House” (a gentle breeze caresses our skin and carries our mind like a wind chime).
