BE A LOCAL COOK FOR A DAY
Our journey begins by observing a mosaic that beautifully narrates Ischia’s rich history, traditions, and folklore. It’s just a glimpse into the captivating tapestry of this island’s past (what a visual feast for the eyes!).
Step by step, we reach the heart of our experience: Nino and Liliana’s villa.
We pass through the gate and are greeted, in the wonderful garden, by the scent of vivid flowers, and the jumping of fish in the small pond.
Something catches our attention (we hear some people chatting in incomprehensible language and their laughs fill the air). So, crossing the little bridge above the pond, we move first to the outdoor living room, to enter then to the home.
Nino and Liliana are waiting for and welcoming us like their old friends (we are living the perfect and warm Italian hospitality, where kisses and hugs are compulsory).
It is a shame to break such an exciting moment, but we have to follow the hosts because we’re about to become local cooks for a day (👨🍳👩🍳).
They take us outdoors, where a tiny and beautiful kitchen and a large table are set up for us.
All around, a tasty smell of sun-dried tomatoes, lemons, and aromatic herbs (here, we can perceive laughter and stories that have seasoned countless meals).
So let’s roll up our sleeves and start preparing homemade pasta (It’s a tough job but somebody must do it).
As we knead the dough, they tell us about the family’s garden, where they grow the fresh ingredients that will be used in the dishes (there is no price for such stories and we are struck by the appearance and size of the vegetables and fruits: zucchini, tomatoes, lemons…).
In the meantime, we hear a pot mumbling. It’s the ragù (bolognese) cooking, just itching to season our pasta (our mouths are watering).
We pass to prepare our own eggplant parmigiana (putting layers of eggplant, tomato sauce, and Parmigiano in a little clay pot is very relaxing).
Finally, the dessert. But it’s a surprise that we want to discover at the moment 😉
As our culinary masterpiece simmers to perfection, Nino takes us on a delightful tour of the family cellar. Here, we savour a tantalizing aperitif, tapping wine directly from the barrel (the flavours dance on our palate, awakening our senses to the island’s soul).
In the end, we gather around the table to enjoy our work, the meal, and the company, just like any typical Italian nonna’s Sunday lunch (what delicacies and what a beautiful atmosphere). And we honestly feel like we have known Lilliana and Nino forever.
Time has passed quickly but memories will remain for a long time. It’s time for kisses and hugs and to say goodbye.
